PAC Proto is versatile. Two 11 GA steel grates and one 11GA steel Hot plate allows many cooking configurations. Pegs inside allow you to set up one or both grates on six available levels.
For bread or pizza, use a small wood fire with one grate on top level.
Use two grates on upper levels. Use bottom grate to hold charcoal. This set up is self cleaning as the ash falls through when it burns out.
Slow smoking a small lite batch like beef jerky, use one or two grates on upper levels. Can use as little as a dozen charcoals in base of the stove with snake method.
For large items like a whole chicken or pork shoulder use charcoal and/or prime with wood first in the base of the stove. Set a grate on bottom level as heat baffle or tray for water pans. Set cooking grate on mid or upper mid levels.
Remove stove pipe and put hot plate on three pipe supports. Use moderate or light heat by building a small kindling fire. Feed kindling sized wood in front door as needed.
Use hot plate for frying pans or small pots.
Use front door to load your fire wood. Prepping and staging your wood to ideal size is help full.
Remove stove pipe and set wok on three supports. A wok with a long handle may or may not be unsteady on supports. Use your judgement. Wok shown in gallery with sunflower seeds is ideal. You can feed wood in the front door or even the top port with this config.
If you live near salt water you can often set up a stove and find drift wood in the same areas. Haul some water to your stove by the bucket and boil this down. High heat is required here and can PAC can deliver.
A pot for a crab boil can sit directly on the three pipe supports with or without the hot plate. Use your best judgement. Avoid using a large heavy pot with a very hot fire.
This set up can be too top heavy and hazardous if you over do it. Use your best judgement.
NO. NEVER. You should not deep fry anything on this stove. PAC stove is too efficient and any oil fire inside the stove will quickly accelerate. Any spill over will quickly ignite and engulf the stove.
Smoking or very low heat cooking on the Proto should be done out of the wind or breeze. PAC Star fire does this slightly better with its adjustable heat shrouds.
